Abadín makes F2 switch

José Luis Abadín has added his name to the list of drivers who have recently signed up for the 2011 Formula 2 season, with the Spaniard confirming his place on a grid of over 20 competitors on Wednesday. The 24-year-old gained experience in the European F3 Open Series after progressing from karting, and went on to finish third in the 2009 Copa de España class with three wins to his name.

"I’m looking forward to F2 because following on from F3 it is the best option to fight on equal terms, and there is a high level of competition," the Orense-born man commented. "I have much less experience than the other drivers at Silverstone with this car but I will go step by step, learning everything, thanks to the extensive information that F2 gives me."

Formula 2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer was pleased to welcome Abadín: "Jose is an intelligent guy who’s eager to learn and progress in F2 as quickly as possible after three seasons in F3. Our onboard video and data sharing feature has yielded huge gains in performance for many drivers in F2, and this will be invaluable for Jose, who I fully expect to be challenging for points as the season progresses."

Piñeiro secures Formula 2 seat

Ramón Piñeiro has confirmed his place on the 2011 Formula 2 grid, with the opening race of the season taking place at Silverstone this weekend. The young Spaniard competed in the final round of last year’s campaign in Valencia, securing a points finish in race two before going on to perform well during the various winter tests.

"I was P2 in testing here, so I expect a great weekend," Piñeiro commented. "The competitors will be hard to beat but I will give my all and achieve a strong result. F2 is great for showing potential as all the cars are equal and run by one team.

"I will fight for the championship. Testing has been good and I have expectations for the top. I look forward to being in the fight and taking podiums and wins."

Formula 2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer added: "I’m absolutely thrilled that Ramón will be racing in F2 this year. He came close to winning a very competitive FPA championship last year, and his debut at Valencia in Formula Two was outstanding. Given the promise he has shown so far, and his impressive pace in pre-season testing, I have no doubt Ramón will be a frontrunner this year."

Marinescu confirms place on F2 grid

Romanian racer Mihai Marinescu has announced that he will be competing in Formula 2 for a second year, with a top three finish in the championship firmly in his sights. The 22-year-old graduated to F2 at the start of 2010 after a year competing in Formula Renault 3.5. After a double points finish during the opening round at Silverstone, Marinescu went on to finish the season in 11th place with 68 points to his name.

"Last year was really good and I’ll be putting that experience into good use this time,” the Braşov-born man commented ahead of the new season. “Silverstone testing went well and I feel confident with the track, so it’s a great opportunity for the podium. In the championship I want to finish in the top three but I have my eyes on the Williams F1 test."

Formula 2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer added: "It’s really great to have Mihai back for 2011. He showed great promise last year and given his impressive run in pre-season testing I’m sure he will be a strong contender for podiums, and maybe even race wins, starting from Silverstone this weekend."

Christopher Zanella has announced that he will be switching categories in 2011, as the young Swiss driver steps up from a full campaign in Italian F3 to take part in Formula 2. After a promising season in which he finished sixth overall, the 21-year-old went on to take part in F2 winter testing, and has since decided to join the grid.

"I chose F2 because I strongly believe that it’s the only racing competition where everyone has a fair and equal chance," said Christopher. "Also in comparison with GP3 and GP2 it has a far better cost to benefit ratio. The quality of the field is very high but I will be aiming for the top two at the end of the year."

Jonathan Palmer, Formula 2 Series Director, added: "Christopher looked strong last December when he tested the Williams F2 car at Barcelona, being only 0.1 sec from Italian F3 champion Cesar Ramos.

Cole joins 2011 Formula 2 field

James Cole has announced that he will be competing in Formula 2 this year, after getting his first taste of the category in winter testing. The 22-year-old won the British Formula Ford Championship in 2009, and went on to compete in the National Class of British F3 before opting to make his F2 switch for the new season.

"I chose F2 because of the enjoyment of driving the car", Cole said after getting a taste for the Williams JPH1B in winter testing. "It’s got a lot of power and it’s great that everyone’s got the same equipment - you don’t have to pay for a better car and I’m looking forward to a good season.

"The first test at Silverstone went well, we were in the top six straight away and I’d never driven the car before, so if I can regularly be in the top six we’ll see what happens from there. The winner’s prize of an F1 test with Williams is fantastic."

Formula 2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer added: "James has enjoyed a great deal of success in his racing career so far and is clearly an outstanding prospect, so we’re delighted he’s competing in F2 this year. He adapted to the Williams F2 car remarkably well in the tests at Silverstone and Snetterton, and was impressively quick from the outset.

"I’m looking forward to seeing what he achieves this season in the equal environment of Formula Two, where he’ll be competing against a field of exceptionally talented drivers across some truly legendary F1 circuits."
